We caught up with Hugh Welsh, President of North America Royal DSM [NYSE Euronext: DSM], a $12 billion Dutch material and life sciences company, to talk about how his company has integrated sustainability into its financial compensation, and why.

Sustainability: Could you please explain what DSM does? It’s not a name you come across as a consumer that often.

Mr. Welsh: Sure. We are one of the world’s largest nutritional ingredient companies which provides vitamins, lipids, carotenoids and enzymes for the food and feed stocks of the world, many of which you might find in your local grocery. We also produce specialty materials and resins, plastics, fibers, biomedical materials, and are doing pioneering work in the production of energy using biomass (e.g. corn stalks) rather than food products.
