Rotary Club West Shore's Annual Chili Cook Off

August 24, 2013

The Rotary Club of West Shore is getting ready to hold its 9th Annual Chili Cook Off. This dynamite event, promising fiery competition and fun, will be held on August 24th from 11am-3pm at a NEW LOCATION at Millstream Village (2401 Millstream Rd) in Langford. The Chili Cook Off was conceived as a fun family event that welcomes summer and raises funds for the wonderful work of the West Shore Rotary Club.

15 + local organizations and corporate teams will prepare at least 5 gallons of chili and will serve the public and judges vying for the coveted trophies for People’s Choice and Best Judged Chili.

People’s Choice Award – The teams will be preparing at least 5 gallons of chili and dispensing it to the public who pay $5 for a voting card that allows them to sample the chili from each team and vote for their favourite. With 15+ teams this year there should be quite a competition. The team receiving the most votes wins the People’s Choice Award trophy!

Best Judged Chili – The second part of the competition involves the Judges. The judges are required to do a blind tasting of the various chili offerings and rate them on aroma, consistency, color, taste, and aftertaste on a scale of 1 to 5. In addition to the tasting and rating the judges are given another set of rating forms that they use in reviewing the presentations of the various teams. Here they rate them on the fun things: decoration of their booth, costumes, showmanship with the patrons, presentation of the chili and any extras, and bribes. The teams are encouraged to bribe the judges and each team is supplied with an Official Bribe Envelope into which they will put any bribe monies. Once again these will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5. Following the judging all the judges get together to compare notes and choose first, second and third place teams.

Best Showmanship – Much of the fun of the Chili Cook Off comes from the creativity and good nature of the chili teams. Teams are encouraged to decorate their tent, dress up and put on a show for the community. This year will be the second year that we present the special Best Showmanship Award!

There will be lots of free activities for the family including; bouncy castle, live entertainment, kids activities and more!
